Is it safe?
Safety is always my priority when planning events.
Fire?
Fire can understandably, be an initial concern for some clients.
However, when people try to light a fire by friction methods they realise how difficult it truly is.
Friction fire lighting, is a skill requiring patience, some physical strength and very specific equipment.
Could it be misused?
I think it most unlikely that friction fire lighting would ever be used in a negative context. It would be impractical due the bulky equipment, physical ability and skill levels involved. If people were so inclined, there are much easier ways to start a fire (which I don't teach).
Health and safety
Safety is of utmost importance and is always my first consideration. Great care is always taken to ensure there is no risk to the public during my displays. The fires I produce during my demonstrations are very small and always very carefully controlled. As soon as flames are visible I place the entire fire in a metal box to extinguish it.
I have a DBS and will comply fully with any risk assessment or checks you require.
Display area
For Public events an area of approximately 6m x 6m of short grass or rough ground will be sufficient, ideally with vehicle access.
I use a 1m high safety fence around the area which stops wandering toddlers and dogs.
Gravel, and tarmac areas are not suitable for large public events.
If you have access to woodland, or a smaller area, then I have alternative shelters that would be more suitable.
Severe weather
It would be difficult and unwise to run my sessions in severe weather (gusty wind in particular), but I'm happy and able to work in most other conditions as long as the client is happy.
Indoors?
Yes. there are many safe indoor sessions I can arrange.
